TLDR: Power Vinyasa and Foundational classes aren’t two completely different yoga practices. Both classes are rooted in Baptiste methodology which uses the Journey into Power sequence as its blueprint. The differences boil down to how the practice is experienced and what the class emphasizes. So let’s get into it!

If you’re wondering which class is right for you, the good news is, there’s no wrong answer. Every class is adaptable for every skill level, and at their core, the Power Vinyasa and the Foundational classes are both rooted in the Baptiste methodology and utilize the Journey into Power sequence as a blueprint.

What is “Journey into Power”? I mean, if it’s the blueprint from which my practice will be built, I oughta know a little bit about what I’m signing up for right?  Journey into Power is an 11 sequence, 53 asana practice designed as a method for revealing one’s innate power through awareness, breath, and disciplined movement.  The sequences are a journey within themselves, guiding us deeper into the body and mind.

We begin with Integration, uniting our mind and body through conscious breathing. Inviting life force to rise and energize us as we flow through Awakening and Vitality. We then explore Equanimity, finding balance between effort and ease, before Grounding and reconnecting with what supports us. From the ground we find Stability, strengthening our core. This leads us into Igniting, fueling our inner fire, and then Opening and Release, creating space to expand, soften, and let go. Finally, Rejuvenation guides us toward renewal, culminating in the deeply deserved surrender of Deep Rest. Each section contains its own asanas that are curated to tell a story of rebirth each time you step onto the mat.

Beyond the physical execution, the practice also functions as a system of self-inquiry. Each posture and transition becomes an opportunity to observe oneself. We observe the recurring thoughts, emotions and reactions that are brought to light. Letting the energy move through you. Letting each new breath dislodge what is static and reinvigorate it into something new. Releasing any ideas of what the practice should be and showing up in your body as it is today.

Now that you have a basic understanding of the methodology behind the class, let’s dive more into the logistics of how these classes are different!

The Foundational class is where you continue to build the basics. It’s hosted in a warm room, encouraging you to generate your own internal heat or tapas. At the Shala, Foundations is offered as 60 and 75 minute classes. These classes are slower and have more instruction focused on alignment and technique through the 5 pillars of the Baptiste methodology. Learning to utilize Ujjayi, Dristi, Bandhas, Tapas and Vinyasa throughout your practice will support and shape your experience and growth. During this class you’re encouraged to play with your edge, exploring what the pose feels like and what else is possible. If you’re new to yoga or the studio, this is definitely a great place to start and return to as you continue to grow in your practice.

The Power Vinyasa class builds on those foundational elements, bringing them together into a more dynamic practice. The Shala’s Power Vinyasa class is offered in 60 and 90 minute increments, both of which are hosted in a 90+ degree room. The 90 minute class touches on each asana, giving you ample time to sink deeper. The 60 minute class tends to be more freeform as far as which poses the teacher chooses from each sequence. In general, the Power Vinyasa classes are more vigorous and flowing than the Foundational class. Using your breath and gaze to harness your attention, you’ll experience a class that is both challenging and transformative. And believe me, you can expect to sweat!

The real question you need to ask yourself is: What does my practice need today? Some days, that might mean embracing heat, intensity and discipline. Other days it might mean slowing down, refining your alignment, reconnecting with your breath and returning to the foundation of it all. Both practices are powerful, so the best class is the one that meets you where you are.
